There have been numerous enquires for a map or maps showing the whereabouts all of the backcountry huts under DOC management. It proved quite a challenge as I was determined to label each with the hut name rather than some shorthand identifier. And it wasn’t so much the number of huts that was an issue, rather the high density in some areas (notably in the Hokitika/Rakaia/Waimakariri catchments and in the axial ranges of the North Island). The trade-off was the need for separate North and South Island maps (and the prints will likely prove a bit large for some people). Anyway the maps are now online as additions to the Geographx wall map cataloque. They can be browsed freely in detail, and there are options to order prints for those who want them
